What is Podiatry?

Podiatry is the management of disease and disorders of the lower limb and foot. Podiatry improves quality of life by maintaining and enhancing mobility.

Originally this profession, known as chiropody, treated common foot ailments such as corns, callus and ingrowing toe-nails. Today, we call foot health practitioners Podiatrists. This is because the qualification and regulation of the profession has increased, the research on foot related conditions has expanded, and scope of practice has broadened considerably.

A podiatrist treats these common foot complaints, but also addresses the mechanical cause of the problem, why these issues arise in the first place.

At Podiatry West, we treat children, older people and everyone in between for all conditions of the foot and foot-related issues of the leg and ankle.
